Apple has officially released the first public beta of iOS 13, iPadOS, macOS Catalina, and tvOS 13, giving you a chance to try out the new software before it becomes publicly available later this fall.
The company has already released two iOS betas to developers, but Mondayâs release marks the public launch of the software for everyone.
I have been using the iOS 13 developer beta for the past few weeks, and it doesnât seem to be too buggy. But you should always expect odd bugs and crashes since this isnât the final version of the software.
A lot of third-party apps are yet to add support for system-wide dark mode, which is the headlining feature of iOS/iPadOS. Battery drain is a lot worse than usual, too â on my iPhone XS, a moderate to heavy use only gets me about six hours before having to plug it again. But this is obviously a beta version, so your mileage may vary.
If you donât mind taking a chance with these issues, itâs definitely worth a go to see whatâs coming up in iOS 13. However, Iâd recommend that you donât install it on your primary device, and instead try it on a spare iPhone or iPad.
Hereâs how to download and install iOS 13 beta:
- First back up your iPhone and iPad: Open Settings > Tap your Apple ID account on the top of the screen.
- From your Apple account screen, go to iCloud > Head to iCloud Backup and turn the option on > Hit âBack up now.â This way it will be easy to revert to the older version in case you find the user experience too problematic.
- Sign up for Apple Beta Software Program via Safari on your iPhone or iPad. This is important because it wonât work with any other browser. Enter your Apple ID information, and agree to the terms and conditions.
- Enroll your device â iPhone/iPad â by downloading the iOS 13 public preview profile.
- Scroll to the âInstall Profileâ section of the website. Tap the button labeled âDownload profilem,â and allow the file to be downloaded.
- Once you have downloaded the profile, open the Settings app. Youâll find a new section on top called âProfile Downloaded.â Select it, and install the profile.
- Your iPhone/iPad will now restart to complete the profile installation.
- After your device has restarted, head to Settings > General > Software Update to install the iOS 13 beta update.
As long as you continue to have the profile installed on your iPhone/iPad, youâll continue to receive periodic updates over-the-air until the software is ready for release in September. You can roughly expect an update every two weeks.
Apart from dark mode, iOS 13 introduces several new features to the iPhone, including nifty updates to apps like Photos, Messages, Maps, and Reminders. Thereâs also the new âSign in with Appleâ single sign-on feature that lets you log in to third-party websites through Appleâs secure service, rather than Google and Facebook.
