Microsoft’s now rolling out a firmware update bringing support for Dolby Atmos (and other systems that use bitstream pass-through) to Xbox One and Xbox One S consoles belonging to members of the Xbox Insider Program.

“Calling all audio aficionados. Rolling out to Preview this week: Blu-ray Bitstream pass-through including Dolby Atmos support on Xbox One/S,” writes Microsoft’s Director of Programming Larry Hryb in a post on Twitter.

For those unaware, Dolby Atmos is a relatively new standard of 3D surround sound that’s built upon traditional 5.1 and 7.1 layouts, which means it should be fairly easy for owners to upgrade their setup to support the state-of-the-art technology.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear when Atmos will start making its way to all Xbox One and Xbox One S owners — so if you’re itching to start playing games and watching movies with next-gen audio, your best bet is to register for the Insider Program.
