The Nexus 5X goes on sale and Google celebrates with ‘instant’ Project Fi invites

The Nexus 5X goes on sale and Google celebrates with ‘instant’ Project Fi invites

Google’s Nexus 5X has finally gone on sale.

The $379 handset is available today from the Google Store in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, India, Korea and Japan (pricing varies by region). LG says it’ll land in more markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas in the following weeks.

It’s Google’s successor to the popular Nexus 5, featuring a 5.2-inch HD display, and comes with a Snapdragon 808 processor, the same 20.3 megapixel shooter with 1.55µm pixels as the Nexus 6P and a fingerprint detector.

We liked it a lot during out hands-on at the announcement.

Of course, we knew the 5X was coming, so the more notable bit is that Google is celebrating the launch by handing out ‘instant’ invites to its Project Fi wireless service all day, for only today.

Normally, you’d have to request an invite and wait an indefinite amount of time to try it out.

If you’re not familiar, the service operates under T-Mobile and Sprint’s coverage, and costs just $20 a month for unlimited talk and text (including international texting!), tethering, and coverage in 120+ countries.

Data, meanwhile, costs $10 per GB, and you’re refunded for every unused megabyte.

Other than the two new devices, only 2014’s Nexus 6 currently has support for Project Fi. If you’re buying a new Nexus or have a Nexus 6 lying around, now’s your chance to give Google’s network a whirl.
