In an effort to contribute to computer literacy in the Arab region, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGorg) introduced TAGITop, the first branded Arabic Netbook in the region.
Given that this is a non-profit initiative, TAGorg has announced its commitment to producing one million devices over a span of five years. According to TAGorg, this has helped ensure the laptop is initially introduced at its cost-price of $400 to maximize reach.
The netbook comes in a glossy chocolate color with UV coating and features the below specifications:
- Processor: Intel Atom N470 @1.83 GHz
- Screen: 10.1”, 16:9, 1024 x 600 • HDD: 2.5”, 320 GB, 5400 rpm
- Memory: 2GB DDRII, expandable up to 4GB
- Webcam: 1.3 megapixel
- Battery life: 6-cell, 2.6Ah (8.5 hrs)
Considering that the average netbook price is under $300 in countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, TAGITop is technically not cheap, but TAGorg is aware of that and is working on additional deals to reduce the cost. Its long-term plans aim at introducing computers into the market priced at 40% less than the current market price.
TAGITop comes preloaded with Arabic educational software including dictionaries and a Cambridge International Baccalaureate training tool.
TAGITop is available in the entire Middle East in addition to countries like China, Cyprus, Turkey, Russia and others.
