Groupon acquires SideTour, a curated local-experience marketplace

sidetour-logoJust nine days after Groupon acquired European last-minute hotel booking service Blink, the daily-deals company has announced that it’s further boosting its travel credentials by snapping up local experience startup SideTour.

Founded in 2011, SideTour serves as a marketplace for discovering, booking and hosting local activities, with the company hand-picking and suggesting events to other users who want to touch base with hosts in a specific locale.

Events typically average around 12 attendees, and can cover anything from history and art, to food and drink. It currently operates in Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia, though expansions are on the horizon in the wake of the Groupon acquisition.

We’re told that SideTour will continue as a separate entity for “some time”, with Groupon distributing event notifications across its network through email, web and mobile. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
